Employment for women in Honduras

Employment for women in Honduras

To make a virtue of necessity: this is exactly what Alfa y Omega, a small business run by nine women, has done.

Orange wine
In the highlands of Marcala a coffee for connoisseurs is cultivated. This particular coffee bean grows in the shadow of orange trees. Every year thousands of oranges growing on these trees were left decaying, because the costs of harvesting and transporting them did not counterbalance the low market prices.

But Alfa y Omega realised the value of these oranges. These nine women decided to use the oranges to produce a full-bodied fruit wine as well as fine quality marmalade.

In short: the decaying oranges created employment for these women and their products gave the local economy a more varied basis.
